Consumption motivations in agroecological markets in Soconusco, Chiapas
Encounter and resistance of domestic groups
Abstract
Abstract
The agroecological markets (mae) of the Soconusco region in Chiapas, serve as spaces for preserving culinary traditions, biodiversity, and food sovereignty through the use and management of Non-Conventional Edible Plants (panc) from Mam coffee-growing areas. This study aims to analyze the challenges, achievements, and motivations of consumers at “El
Huacalero” and “La Marimba” markets. Using interviews, surveys, and participant observation, the main motivations identified include health and well-being (83%), agrochemical-free foods (93%), support for local producers (85%), authentic flavor (77%), and nostalgia and cultural revaluation (83%). The findings highlight that domestic group particularly women strengthen biocultural heritage, promote resilient food systems, and territorialize agroecology, fostering solidarity-based local economies in which panc play a vital role.
