Abstract
La familia Médicis ejerció un rol muy importante en la actividad po- lítica de Florencia en la época de Maquiavelo y en su propia vida. En este artículo se analiza específicamente la forma en que esta familia gobernó la ciudad y cómo sus acciones de gobierno influyeron en el pensamiento político de Maquiavelo. Se destaca de manera especial la forma en que la familia Médicis corrompió la vida republicana de Florencia hasta convertirla prácticamente en un principado, y cómo a partir de ello, Maquiavelo determinó que era una necesidad de primer orden definir y establecer con claridad la forma de gobierno que había de elegir un Estado.
