MEXICO´´´ S MULTIMEDIAL HOMOPHOBIC DISCOURSE IN THE 1960s
Abstract
Through an analysis of representations in Mexican literature and press of non-heterosexual men during the 1960s, this study will examine the socio-ideological context surrounding two murders and one suicide, all of which claimed the lives of gay men. Through the media discourse surrounding their deaths a doctor, an actor, and a transvestite became examples of what one should never be. Systemic and systematic homophobia used their deaths to reinforce heterosexual masculinity as the primary constituent of Mexican identity.
